Keep your resume updated

Keep your resume up-to-date at all times.  Make sure that all dates of employment are accurate.   Do not exaggerate or misstate the facts.  Assume that all information contained on your resume will be verified.  Do not state an “objective” on your resume. If appropriate, this can be included as part of an introductory message.

Secure written references before you begin your search

Traditionally candidates provide names and contact information of references to potential employers at the end of the interviewing process, prior to an offer. This is an accepted practice to this day.

We recommend that you front-end this process and ask appropriate former bosses, co-workers and subordinates to provide you with written letters of recommendation. A Harvard Business Review posting offers some advice on asking for that letter.

Attaining that letter in advance serves multiple purposes:

  1. Once you have a written reference in hand, preferably in electronic format, you never have to worry about bothering your reference again.

  2. You will know what your references have said (and will say if asked) about your performance in advance.

  3. A written reference also can accompany your resume at the initial stages of the interview process, while trying to secure an interview, when it matters most. This will greatly increase your chances of being called for an interview.
